Group finalizes proposed city charter amendments

The city of Graham Charter Review Working Group completed its review of the city’s charter recently and has proposed several amendments which will be brought before the city council at a future meeting.

At their meeting Thursday, May 16, the charter review group finalized the list of nine propositions for amendments to the Graham Home Rule Charter, which was last amended 33 years ago in May 1991.

District honors GHS student achievements

Annually the Graham ISD Board of Trustees devotes one meeting to the recognition of students within the district and their accomplishments throughout the year. That meeting was held this week honoring students from every campus.

Students were recognized by their campus principal Wednesday, May 10 at Graham High School. Recognitions were given for students’ academic, fine arts and extracurricular achievements during the 2023-2024 school year.

GISD board approves $473,000 in district technology purchases

Budget amendments totaling $437,000 were approved by the Graham ISD Board of Trustees this week to address technology needs within the district.

Superintendent Sonny Cruse said GISD Technology Director Chris Rasile identified and made recommendations for the purchases by the board during their meeting Wednesday, May 15.

The largest item at $196,000 is for the replacement of interior cameras at Graham High School and Graham Junior High School, which will be partially funded by a grant.

Planning for the future: GHS students sign letters of intent at Academic Signing Day

Graham High School seniors were honored this week at the school’s Academic Signing Day.

Peers, parents, teachers and staff were on hand Monday, May 13 to witness many of Graham’s seniors sign letters of intent to pursue post-high school plans such as colleges, trade schools or military service.

Early voting begins Monday in primary runoff election

The runoff election for the March primaries will have early voting beginning Monday across the state and in Young County, with one local election for Young County Commissioner Precinct 3.

Early voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 20 through Friday, May 24. Early voting polling locations will be North Central Texas College at 928 Cherry St. in Graham and Olney Community Library and Arts Center at 807 W. Hamilton St. in Olney.

Trial period approved for food trucks downtown

After over a year of discussion to establish a centralized location for food trucks which was narrowed down to the downtown square, a trial policy for rental of spaces downtown was approved last week by the Graham City Council.

The city council approved a trial policy for food trucks operating on the interior of the square during their meeting Thursday, May 9. The trial policy will run from Monday, June 3 through Tuesday, Sept. 3, unless rescinded or extended by the council.

County approves amended tax abatement with Plug Holding

Young County recently held a public hearing regarding an amended tax abatement agreement with Plug Project Holding Co., LLC, a company establishing a hydrogen production facility in the county.

As part of the regular commissioners court meeting Monday, May 13, Andrew Temple of Plug Holding Co., LLC (PPHC), presented the first amended tax abatement agreement that his company had been working on with County Judge Win Graham.

GHS BBQ team brings the heat at state competition

The Graham High School barbecue team is on a hot streak and has been for the last several years. The Smokin’ Steers and Graham PitSteers recently competed at the state BBQ championships and had a strong showing.

Out of 98 teams at the final event, the Graham PitSteers brought home 10th overall as a team. At the competition, only the top 30 teams were placed with the rest of the results set to come out within the next few weeks. While the Smokin’ Steers don’t know the details of their performance, they represented their school well.

Third Street plaza project concept presented to GEIC

A concept was presented this week by the engineering firm Jacob and Martin which would close Third Street inside the Graham downtown square and change it into a pedestrian plaza.

The presentation was made Wednesday, May 8 to the Graham Economic Improvement Corporation Board of Directors, who could be approached in the future to support the project. The GEIC board previously approved Jacob and Martin Civil Engineer Tristan King to develop a concept to turn the Third Street cut-across into a pedestrian plaza.
