What started out as one of the biggest track meets of the season quickly went south as heavy thunderstorms forced the cancellation of the Possum Kingdom Relays last Saturday, March 16.

Schools came from far and wide to participate in the PK Relays at Graham High School as the day started early with the distance running events and many of the field events. While the forecasts didn’t look positive, the teams pushed forward, competing until they couldn’t any longer.

After just a few hours and with only a handful of events actually finishing and getting officially recorded, the sirens blared indicating lightning in the area which forced athletes, coaches and spectators to seek cover. Not more than a few minutes later, the rain began to fall in buckets and thunder crashed nearby.

School officials decided to wait to see if the poor weather would improve so that events could be resumed, but after a few hours of waiting, the entire meet had to be canceled. Storms continued to pound the area on and off throughout the rest of the day.

The PK Relays will not be rescheduled, as many of the teams are continuing with their scheduled meets through the rest of the season. Graham’s next meet will be Thursday, March 21 at Springtown while nearby Newcastle will compete that same day in Archer City.

Listed below are the event, placement, name of the athlete or team and the result for the few events that were recorded. Both Graham and Newcastle had athletes who managed to finish some competitions and their stats are included here.
