The Graham City Council has worked out a proposed budget which will raise taxes two cents — from 59 cents to 61 cents per $100 of valuation.
The overall budget has decreased from $12.8 million to $12.77 million.
“We all need to remember one thing, we lost $300,000 in projected sales tax revenue,” said Mayor Barry White. “We are about $400,000 off in water sales. We’re $700,000 off our budget revenue projections, and we’re going to come in OK.”
City Manager Larry Fields said the city will make it through the 2009-10 fiscal year which ends this month, Read More...

Working hard to shoot again
by David Rupkalvis
(Posted Tue 03:29 pm)

More than two years after he was almost killed in an automobile accident, Roger Smith returned to the archery range for the first time last week. Smith took eight shots Thursday and was able to fire 12 shots Friday. He said the desire to return to shooting inspired him to work harder during his recovery. Archery has been a part of Roger Smith’s life almost as long as he can remember.
He grew up shooting with his dad, and as an adult some of his best memories are shooting with his son, Ryan.
“I guess the first time I shot a bow was probably 40 years ago,” Smith said. “My dad shot a long bow so that’s what I played around with. I stopped shooting for a while and didn’t shoot again until Ryan started shooting. For years, we would go to shoots together and shoot in the backyard.”

Products like K-2 are now illegal in Graham.
The Graham City Council had the third and final reading and vote to pass an ordinance to ban synthetic marijuana products Thursday. The ordinance makes the sale, use and possession of such products marketed as K-2, Blaze and Spice illegal. Items used to smoke the herbal supplements — such as pipes, bongs and more — are also now illegal in Graham.
Councilman Jack Graham asked Police Chief Tony Widner if all vendors were on notice.
“We will deliver notices after the signing,” said Widner.

For decades, Graham citizens have relied on the police department during times of need.
This weekend, the tables will be turned when the Graham Citizens Police Auxiliary hosts Back the Badge on the Downtown Square as a way of raising money to help the police department purchase a drug dog.
Mike Elmore, president of the auxiliary, said Graham needs a drug dog, but the city cannot justify the expense right now. When he learned that, Elmore said it was a perfect opportunity for the auxiliary to help out.
